A.S.F.A. Mosaic Studio: Contemporary Mosaics
The “Other Arcadia” Foundation and the Mosaic Studio of the Athens School of Fine Arts present at 16 Fokionos Negri the exhibition “Contemporary Mosaics”, from the 18th May until the 11th June 2017. The mosaics exhibited were created by 60 students during the last three years, under Associate Professor Daphnae Angelidou and Angeliki Kokonaki.
The young artists sometimes explore the ancient or Byzantine tradition of this ancient Greek art while, at other times, they experiment with creating contemporary works of art. Referencing the past is necessary and it signifies the problematic and hopeful period of the ‘crisis’ which we are experiencing. Artists always delve into the past in order to evolve and to create the new ‘language’ which reflects and expresses modern visual art. Their mosaics demonstrate their fine technical knowledge, their artistic explorations, through this harsh and time-consuming medium, but also their love, ingenuity and expressive ability.
Their precious and colourful tesserae transport us to the “modern times”, which we are experiencing, by offering colour and hope to our everyday life. Nevertheless, the modern world, with its different religions, nations, arts and political views, is a giant mosaic which we are called upon to decipher.
